Care Instructions

All of our ceramics differ from some mass-produced ceramics in their construction and design. My work is all wheel thrown and also only produced in small batches. Every item is 100% hand made in my Geelong Pottery Studio with either stoneware or porcelain clay by myself.

HOW TO CARE FOR CERAMICS

  • Always avoid thermal shock with any ceramic item - DO NOT place a ceramic item in a hot environment from a cold environment or vice versa.

  • Always handle with care: as with all ceramics, our items are breakable. Gravity is the arch enemy of ceramics!

  • Food safety: all of our ceramic kitchen and tableware is food safe and can be used for the storage and consumption of your favourite food items. Please use for the intended purpose only.

  • Filling with water: ceramic vases and vessels hold water well, but not forever. When water remains inside the vessel for an extended period of time (four weeks or longer), the inside of the vessel may become porous and may cause the vessel to leak. Also this is pretty gross and slimy. To avoid watermarks on furniture or other surfaces we recommend placing a saucer or coaster underneath the vessel.

  • Scratching and staining: although we take pride in finishing our ceramics completely, always place any ceramic item onto delicate surfaces with great care. When moving them from one spot to another, lift them, don’t pull or push them. This will avoid scratching delicate surfaces.

  • Although our ceramics can be placed in the dishwasher and/or microwave, we prefer to encourage the use of hand washing, avoiding microwaves and ovens. As the interior temperatures of both ovens and microwaves will vary (super hot and harsh!) we would suggest you utilise the gentle art of hand washing.

  • To help prevent crazing in the teapots, it is best practice to warm the teapot with warm water before using.

  • We recommend that you don’t store our cups or mugs by stacking them or hanging them by the handles.

HOW TO CARE FOR PLANTING VESSELS

  • Always avoid thermal shock with any ceramic item - DO NOT place a ceramic item in a hot environment from a cold environment or vice versa.

  • Filling with water: our planting vessels hold water well, but not forever. When water remains inside the vessel for an extended period of time (four weeks or longer), the inside of the vessel may become porous and may cause the vessel to leak. To avoid watermarks on furniture or any other surface, we recommend placing a saucer underneath the vessel.

  • Drainage holes and plugs: for some of our items we provide a drainage hole and supply a fitting plug. As our items are handmade, the hole size will vary from item to item, therefore we cannot guarantee the plug supplied will be 100% water-tight.

  • Fading of colours: when exposed to direct sunlight over an extended period of time, the colours of our planting vessels may fade slightly. This is a normal effect that the sun has and is not related to the quality of the product.

  • The jute ropes that come with your hanging items will perish over time depending on how they are subjected to the elements that Mother Nature provides. Better to display these items indoors to enjoy them forever or be prepared to replace your jute ropes from time to time. When planting these beauties out, keep the soil under the rope line to prevent any deterioration.

I personally always hand wash my handmade pottery and I tend not to place any of these items in the microwave either. Every item I create is part of a small batch that have their own individual characteristics.

I personally always hand wash my handmade pottery and tend not to use them in microwaves. Remember, this isn’t mass produced factory ceramics, each pot is individual. Additionally, crackle glazes like this can stain naturally overtime with liquids such as tea or coffee. The pots themselves are highly vitrified and there’s nothing toxic or dangerous that can leach out from the crackle glazes. This is simply a byproduct of having such surfaces and you’ll find that crackle glazes, or crazing like this, can appear in wood fired pots, soda fired pots and salt fired wares too.
